Artist Statement:
According to a study of the relationship Nigerians are having to their forest, Eberechukwu Johnpaul Ihemezie found "people's perceptions and relationships to sacred forests are shifting from non-material to material value (...) due to the gradual loss of indigenous knowledge and diminishing regard for culture." The departure from one's ancestral culture is the departure from one's original community. The Mahoganey Tree, found in Nigerian forests, is officially in a "Vulnerable" state. If we fail to find the "non-material value" in community, we will continue to be vulnerable and lose access to the memory of being a part of a sacred and mighty forest.
